The Hobbit trail (and beach)

I am sure you all are getting quite tired of my constant posting about the joys of Oregon in the summer.  But seriously, this place is AWESOME in the summer!  If we feel like it's too hot where we live, we hop in the car, drive an hour west and we are at the beach where it is usually 20 degrees cooler.  Lakes, rivers and trails are everywhere you look here as well.  Now that 3 of my 5 kids have entered that stage of teen and pre-teen, we are doing more adventurous things.

Here is a little known Oregon coast secret for all of those Lord of the Rings enthusiasts out there!
This is the Hobbit trail.  It is just a few miles north of Heceta Head lighthouse.  If you are not looking for the trailhead, you will most likely zip right by it.  (We almost did too).  It is unlike any other trail I have seen on the Oregon coast.  It does indeed look like a trail a Hobbit would take down to the ocean.  The trees are twisted and weird looking and at one point, there is a cluster of trees and bushes so thick that you have to walk through a "Hobbit hole" to get through.  It is COOL!

At the end of the trail is the "Hobbit beach" which is also stunning and very quiet.  Like I say, most tourists just whip on by, not knowing that this gem of a beach exists.  The Westover clan (on day 3 of our reunion) spent some time on Hobbit beach.

Casey just got a new cell phone and it has a cool feature that allows him to take panoramic shots.  The two long pics at the tops of both pages is a 360 degree view of Hobbit beach.  If you are ever in Oregon, give Hobbit beach a try!

Here is what we have been doing since the reunion!
