Memorial Day 2013

You may think we are completely bonkers but since it has become tradition, we decided to take our Memorial Day hike up to the top of Mt. Pisgah despite the driving rain that fell all morning.  We set off early in the morning with a few other die hard hikers from our Ward.  It was muddy and wet and a little cold at the top, but so much fun.  We are glad we did it!

Here is Allison, looking very windblown and wet, standing at the top.  She practically sprinted up to the top without even taking a deep breath!  Oh, to be young!

To our surprise, our good friend Eric had hauled up a birthday cake and ice cream in his backpack to celebrate Grandma Walburger's birthday.  (He did this last year as well.)  The ice cream was even still frozen!  We were so impressed and Grandma loved it!

After the hike, we went on a cemetery tour around Eugene.  We took flowers and American flags to a really old cemetery where we scouted out the gravesites of veterans and placed the flags on them.  This cemetery has people buried in it from Civil War times!  As you can see,it is pretty overgrown so it made the hunt more challenging.

We also took the girls to the veterans wall at Skinner's Park.  It has the names of all of the men and women that died in all the wars starting with WWI from Lane County.  We were amazed at how many died in WWII.  That was a brutal war!  On the back side of the wall is a list of the fallen soldiers from Oregon that died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Finally, we made a trip up to the Westover gravesites.  We put flowers and flags on the graves of Uncle Don, Uncle Mike, Great Grandpa Loren and Great Grandma Bea.  There were already some flowers there so we added to them.

Here are the girls in front of Grandma and Grandpa's grave.  They only knew Great Grandma Bea in this life.  I can't wait for the resurrection so they can meet all of their other amazing relatives and ancestors!

The last big activity of the day was a cook-out at Grandma Walburger's house.  We roasted hot dogs and concluded the evening with another birthday celebration for Grandma.  It was a busy but fulfilling Memorial day for sure!

Here is week 20
